Drinking red wine on Mars may protect against muscle atrophy

A new study by researchers at BIDMC, including Dr. Mary Bouxsein, have shown that resveratrol, a natural ingredient in grapes and blueberries, may protect against muscle atrophy and preserve muscle function under partial gravity conditions. Read the new press release here to learn more about how red wine could protect muscular health on Mars.

New Publications: Congratulations to Authors!

Congratulations on the publications of two new manuscripts!

Congratulations to Dr. Mary Bouxsein on her promotion to Professor of Orthopedic Surgery

Congratulations to Dr. Mary L. Bouxsein on her promotion to Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School! Dr. Bouxsein is the first woman ever to be a Harvard Full Professor in Orthopedics from BIDMC, and the 3rd woman to be a full professor in Orthopedics at Harvard Medical School.

Congratulations to Dr. Bouxsein for being awarded two NASA health and human performance proposals!

NASA’s Human Research Program and Space Biology Program announced the funding of 25 proposals to help answer questions about astronaut health and performance during future long-duration missions beyond low-Earth orbit. Dr. Mary Bouxsein was awarded two proposals titled:

  • Dose-response study of musculoskeletal outcomes following centrifugation in adult mice on the International Space Station
  • Time course of spaceflight-induced adaptations in bone morphology, bone strength and muscle quality

Congratulations to Dr. Bouxsein on her funded proposals! Read more about the awards here.
